The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the nation’s secondary school students. Today, National Honor Society chapters are found in all 50 states and more than 1 million students are members of the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society.

The Phoenix Chapter of the National Honor Society of Gatewood Schools holds its tapping ceremony to induct new members annually. The Gatewood National Honor Society recognizes outstanding high school students who excel academically. To be eligible for membership, a candidate must be a member of the sophomore, junior or senior class. Have a cumulative average of at least 90. Membership shall then be based on the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the society throughout the high school years; scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
